Despite the challenges, a host of Asian firms see the merger writing on the wall. In fact, over the past 10 months, eight Asian law firms have announced mergers with partners from the region.

Macau firms MdME Lawyers and DSL Lawyers are among the most recent to ink a marriage, creating one entity under the brand of MdME. The combined firm, which is supposed to go live in October, will count 12 partners across three offices in Macau, Hong Kong and Portugal.

“I think what really brought us to discuss a merger and to where we are now is our understanding that the market is developing, and that there is the need for more specialized knowledge, and that knowledge, that specialization, requires a certain scale,” said Rui Pinto Proença, managing partner of MdME. “Our combination will allow for that.”

He added that MdME has developed a professional management structure that appealed to DSL, which wants to dedicate more time to clients—and client projects. “MdME’s existing infrastructure helps with that,” he said. “With different portfolios of clients that could benefit from a more extensive team, and for the addition of different specialties within that team—that was the first reason this move was so natural,” Carlos Simões, co-founder of DSL, said.
